River to River Festival: Souleymane Badolo, Dance My Life

Inspired by the contrast in the paces of life between his native home of Burkina Faso and his adopted home of New York City, Souleymane Badolo’s Dance my life is a celebration that crosses boundaries to highlight the similarities of what we all experience. In the fast-paced world of the present, there is a sense of urgency to accomplish as much as possible as fast as possible. Yet, people everywhere still feel and think about many of the same things – including work, family, prayer, joy, and sadness. This commonality of the human experience is at the center of Dance my life. For River To River, Dance my life will be performed at Pier 15, where the openness of its East River backdrop is an ideal setting for a dance that celebrates our shared similarities in life experiences that we all feel.

    Event Location:
    The Seaport District, Pier 15

River to River Festival: Olga Bell, Krai

Krai is the Russian word for edge, limit, frontier or hinterland. Present-day Russia is divided into a myriad of ‘federal subjects’, including nine krais. In this capacity the term is a political designation, like ‘territory’, but for the earliest Russians these places represented both the promise and terror of the vast unknown. While much has been written about Russia’s major cities, Olga Bell’s Krai is an audio-visual performance concerned with the rest of the map: the wilderness, the towns, the inhabitants and their stories. From the Cossack melodies of Krasnodar Krai in the West to the Chukchi drumming of Kamchatka Krai in the Russian Far East, Krai is a forty-minute journey across the Eurasian landmass.
