Program

The Revitalized Seaport District is committed to creating a district destination for New Yorkers and visitors alike while work progresses towards the grand opening, we have curated a number of installments and activations as a glimpse into the future transformation of the district as a hub for cultural, dining, fashion and entertainment experiences.

As part of the Seaport’s 2016 culture programming, the Howard Hughes Corp., in association with the Downtown Alliance, has partnered with NYC Design Week to host the Downtown Design Festival.

Join Sixpoint Brewery Manager Danny Bruckert for an inspiring overview of the craft of beer making at Sixpoint brewery. On May 2016, the annual program of the Seaport Culture District will kick off with the Downtown Design Festival: a 12 day series of events and activations celebrating the extraordinary explosion in design and creative energy in lower Manhattan over the past decade.


Running from May 5rd to May 17th, 2016, the twelve-day festival will be a major highlight of NYC Design Week, the citywide celebration of New York’s world-class design community sponsored by NYCxDesign and the NYC Economic Development Corporation, and is presented in association with the Downtown Alliance.

As part of the Downtown Design Festival at the Seaport District, a panel discussion organized by the City College of New York and Ouvdd University of Lausanne, Switzerland, will explore the wide range of temporary interventions—including do-it-yourself (DIY) projects and pop-ups—have been deployed to activate urban spaces for a limited time. A diverse and distinguished group of academic scholars and urban professionals will explore the growing popularity of these temporary activations—and critically examine the trend within the context of larger issues of spatial equity and the notion of "the just city.”

The Design Market is an innovative retail installation occupying the ground level of the Seaport Studios at 19 Fulton Street, offering a carefully curated selection of design objects, including furniture, lighting, accessories, artwork, and other merchandise.

The Downtown Design Festival is presented by The Howard Hughes Corporation In association with the Downtown Alliance. As the Seaport District prepares for the opening of the Fulton Market Building later this year and Pier 17 in 2017, the Howard Hughes Corporation is committed to bringing culture, fashion and culinary delights to the re-envisioned Seaport District.

In celebration of the Downtown Design Festival the Seaport District will host an opening night event on the cobblestone pavements of historic Fulton Street. Open and free to the public, the event will feature music, live entertainment as well as food and spirits available for purchase.

"Impact!" will showcase collaborative research and design projects from Parsons School of Design that address issues of major social concern and offer solutions through unexpected design approaches. This exhibition, as part of The Downtown Design Festival, will feature multi-disciplinary projects ranging from product design, lighting design, fashion design, and strategic design and management concepts.

A series of one-on-one public conversations will be held each evening over an eight-day period, from May 10th to May 17th, 2016, in the event space on the second floor of the Seaport Studios. Join CMA Teaching Artists for a special animation workshop with the whole family! Inspired by CMA’s exhibit, “Sew What?”, participants will animate the traditional designs of the Kuna people of northern Panama, known as “Molas”. These are colorful designs with geometric patterns and animal representations. While traditionally created with fabric, families will be animating with a variety of materials such as wax sticks, cray pas, wire and yarn to bring these vibrant images to life one frame at a time! Don’t miss this one-time opportunity to spend time with your family learning about the tradition of the Molas while creating and animating your own! Join CMA Teaching Artists for a special architecture workshop with the whole family! Taking inspiration from the South Street Seaport neighborhood, families will brainstorm and design their own unique buildings! Using cardboard, tape and collage materials, they will work with Teaching Artists to create their own buildings to add to a collaborative neighborhood or to take home! Each family will leave with a special CMA gift bag worth $32! RSVP

Following the Downtown Design Festival (May 3 - May 17, 2016) at the Seaport District, cultural programming will continue through the end of 2016 at the Seaport Culture District at 117 Beekman Street, which will be outfitted with flexible seating, movable displays, and high-quality A/V and projection capabilities to allow wide range of events. The Culture District will be a center for New York’s world-class design community to feature evening and weekend programs and events, including talks, panels, receptions, screenings and film festivals, product launches, conferences, book signings and demonstrations.
